ATAS balks, Emmy list walks

Sha_char_06

Behold the definition of terse:

"The Television Academy is not going to release this information."

The question had been: Will the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences let loose with the top 10 lists for actors/actresses in comedies and dramas, as it did last week with the series in contention for comedy and drama Emmys?

That would be a big fat no (as of Tuesday a.m., that is).

So instead of one clean burst of "official" info, the lists will keep coming out in drips and drabs. Not that anyone has anything better to do this holiday week than plan their Fourth activities and monitor Gold Derby.

The blog, not incidentally, just put out another "this one goes to 11" list for supporting actresses that includes multiple Emmy winner Candice Bergen of "Boston Legal," Christina Hendricks for "Mad Men" and Sharon Gless for "Burn Notice."

Throw in a couple of "Grey's Anatomy" cast members and Jill Clayburgh ("Dirty Sexy Money") but overlook Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights") and January Jones ("Mad Men") and get a group of semifinalists.

Our two cents: If this list is correct, we think there were better choices from "In Treatment" than double Oscar winner Dianne Wiest, namely Mia Wasikowska, who played the suicidal teenager Sophie and/or calculating, confused, cheating wife Embeth Davidtz.

But if Gless makes it to the final five, we'll be rooting for her since we're in awe of her passive-aggressive manipulative chain-smoking well-meaning mom to superspy Michael Westen. If you haven't seen her in this role, you'll have a chance when the show comes back July 10.

Let the campaigning continue.

Oscar Contenders

  • So "The Dark Knight" didn't make it into the final five after all, never mind that critical and popular support. Let's just call the comic-inspired mega-hit "The Biggest Snubee."

Here are the best picture contenders in a race that, two weeks away from the Oscars, seems to be a foregone conclusion ("Slumdog") unless there's a come-from-behind possibility ("The Reader" anyone?)

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett; the politically timely "Milk;" rags-to-riches fairy tale, "Slumdog Millionaire," Holocaust best-seller-based drama "The Reader," and Watergate-era biopic "Frost/Nixon."

Could "Button" and "Slumdog" split the vote, allowing another film to take the prize? Doesn't seem likely. After having clung to "Button" for months as what we thought would be the Academy voters' top vhoice, our money's now on "Slumdog." Momentum can't be ignored.

Watch this blog for updates, ephemera and all manner of postulating.

  • Mmmmm, chocolate Oscar. Not every star will walk away from the 81st annual Academy Awards with a trophy, but if they hit the high-profile Governor's Ball they can have pastry chef Sherry Yard's gold-dusted candy version. Also on the menu from celeb chef Wolfgang Puck is tuna tartare in sesame miso cones, chopped Chino Farms vegetable salad with ginger soy vinaigrette, Maine lobster and caviar. Serve it up!
