Lauren Conrad won't let Emmy go naked

82169506

Someone who understands such things -- that is, consistently readable fashion and style writer Monica Corcoran -- says that Lauren Conrad's dresses are "cute and airy, like meringue."

In other words, fluffy and hollow. Nothing special.

So, Corcoran wonders in yesterday's Image section of the L.A. Times, why will they be featured on the upcoming Emmy telecast as the first-ever custom-created outfits for the trophy presenters?

Asked and answered: Apparently those putting together the show think/hope that giving the gig to the massively overexposed reality princess from "The Hills" will be better for ratings than choosing, say, an award-winning costumer from any number of award-winning TV shows.

Wha?

Sounds a lot like grasping at straws, and not surprisingly, since last year's 13.1 million viewers (a measly 8.4 rating) were the fewest to watch the show in 17 years.

Most of the major industry awards shows have suffered similarly, though we doubt that'll be a problem for the small but mighty MTV VMAs this year, but that's an exception. Then, is this the answer? Turning to Lauren Conrad for some kind of brand rub off? Didja hear? There's a sex tape scandal ready to blow (pun intended). Sex tape!

Will the targeted demo -- the staged-reality-loving celebutard-gazing OK!-reading crowd -- care one bit who "designed" the trophy girl dresses?

Can't imagine that's true. Then again, we'll be at the Emmys because we have to be. And the producers are going for a completely different (i.e. more psychographically desirable) crowd. Good luck with that.

Oscar Contenders

  • So "The Dark Knight" didn't make it into the final five after all, never mind that critical and popular support. Let's just call the comic-inspired mega-hit "The Biggest Snubee."

Here are the best picture contenders in a race that, two weeks away from the Oscars, seems to be a foregone conclusion ("Slumdog") unless there's a come-from-behind possibility ("The Reader" anyone?)

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett; the politically timely "Milk;" rags-to-riches fairy tale, "Slumdog Millionaire," Holocaust best-seller-based drama "The Reader," and Watergate-era biopic "Frost/Nixon."

Could "Button" and "Slumdog" split the vote, allowing another film to take the prize? Doesn't seem likely. After having clung to "Button" for months as what we thought would be the Academy voters' top vhoice, our money's now on "Slumdog." Momentum can't be ignored.

Watch this blog for updates, ephemera and all manner of postulating.

  • Mmmmm, chocolate Oscar. Not every star will walk away from the 81st annual Academy Awards with a trophy, but if they hit the high-profile Governor's Ball they can have pastry chef Sherry Yard's gold-dusted candy version. Also on the menu from celeb chef Wolfgang Puck is tuna tartare in sesame miso cones, chopped Chino Farms vegetable salad with ginger soy vinaigrette, Maine lobster and caviar. Serve it up!
