Teen Choice Awards will keep you company

Samos2

If there is such a thing as a summer slowdown anymore, we'd like to think it's happening right about now, when Hollywood starts to dump its lowered-expectations product onto the market (all aboard the "Midnight Meat Train!" -- or not), the paps struggle to feed their Escalade habits with the pittance they're making these days on Britney photos, and we take a much needed vacation.

Don't be surprised if we come back in a week or so touting "Mamma Mia!" as the hands-down best movie of the year with Oscar potential written all over it. A trip to a Greek island could have just that effect.

While we're gone, you could always busy yourself with our scintillating archives, going back nine continuous months without a breather (did we mention we really need a break?). Better yet, check out our favorite list of blog-tastic destinations, like Vulture, Defamer, and our siblings Live Feed and Risky Biz.

On your to-do-when-bored-out-of-mind list (after you've already seen "The Dark Knight" a fourth time): Watch the "Teen Choice Awards" on Monday because we won't be able to, and report back on decibel level and trouser tightness. The Jonas Brothers are showing up, right? So, presumably, is Shia LaBeouf and his hurt paw, as well as host Miley Cyrus' No. 1 frenemy Demi Lovato. Could be entertaining? With earplugs and a fifth of something really potent?

By the time you read this, we'll be winging our way to sun and fun (love that slightly dishonest "publish later" button). At any rate, have a great week and be ready to talk Emmys, very seriously, when we get back.

Opah!

Oscar Contenders

  • So "The Dark Knight" didn't make it into the final five after all, never mind that critical and popular support. Let's just call the comic-inspired mega-hit "The Biggest Snubee."

Here are the best picture contenders in a race that, two weeks away from the Oscars, seems to be a foregone conclusion ("Slumdog") unless there's a come-from-behind possibility ("The Reader" anyone?)

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett; the politically timely "Milk;" rags-to-riches fairy tale, "Slumdog Millionaire," Holocaust best-seller-based drama "The Reader," and Watergate-era biopic "Frost/Nixon."

Could "Button" and "Slumdog" split the vote, allowing another film to take the prize? Doesn't seem likely. After having clung to "Button" for months as what we thought would be the Academy voters' top vhoice, our money's now on "Slumdog." Momentum can't be ignored.

Watch this blog for updates, ephemera and all manner of postulating.

  • Mmmmm, chocolate Oscar. Not every star will walk away from the 81st annual Academy Awards with a trophy, but if they hit the high-profile Governor's Ball they can have pastry chef Sherry Yard's gold-dusted candy version. Also on the menu from celeb chef Wolfgang Puck is tuna tartare in sesame miso cones, chopped Chino Farms vegetable salad with ginger soy vinaigrette, Maine lobster and caviar. Serve it up!
