Bloody full weekend

Grammy darling Michael Buble is charming the pants off the "Today Show" chicks, Nicolas Cage's moussed page boy is only a few hours from hitting the multiplex, and cry baby Kanye has ended the VMA boycott that no one noticed.

Busy, busy day.

Perhaps the best of the best? The Los Angeles County Fair opens with the promise of a month's worth of greasy-good heart-stopping delicacies in close proximity to livestock and carnies. Doesn't sound appetizing? Here's something to change your minds. Three words, my friends -- deep-fried Spam. With pineapple. Could there be anything better than this? Answer: Yes. There's deep-fried White Castles. We kid you not.

Understand that we'll be preoccupied today with food on a stick, but we'll try to stay focused.

There's only one wide-release movie, Cage's "Bangkok Dangerous," and since it wasn't screened for critics, Rotten Tomatoes basically reviewed the Oscar-winning star's hairdo. They don't seem too hopeful about the movie itself, despite the phenomenal Pang brothers taking charge of their own remake. Regardless, we're eyeing the 4:30 matinee.

It may be a much hotter weekend for TV, with Sunday's packed lineup of the VMAs, the new season of Emmy-nominated "Entourage" and the premiere of "True Blood." See the adorable vampire/waitress couple pictured here at the "True Blood" premiere last night in Hollywood. And check the after party decor. Who knew Satan was a Belvedere fan? Make his a double!

Reviews are middling for the small-town Louisiana-set drama, with the New York Times saying that creator, Oscar and Emmy winner Alan Ball, has turned the romance novel source material into "an R-rated melodrama puffed up with erotic tension and campy gore."

Don't care. Still watching.

Between trips to the Pomona Fairplex, looks like it's shaping up to be a pretty full weekend. Dig in!

Oscar Contenders

  • So "The Dark Knight" didn't make it into the final five after all, never mind that critical and popular support. Let's just call the comic-inspired mega-hit "The Biggest Snubee."

Here are the best picture contenders in a race that, two weeks away from the Oscars, seems to be a foregone conclusion ("Slumdog") unless there's a come-from-behind possibility ("The Reader" anyone?)

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett; the politically timely "Milk;" rags-to-riches fairy tale, "Slumdog Millionaire," Holocaust best-seller-based drama "The Reader," and Watergate-era biopic "Frost/Nixon."

Could "Button" and "Slumdog" split the vote, allowing another film to take the prize? Doesn't seem likely. After having clung to "Button" for months as what we thought would be the Academy voters' top vhoice, our money's now on "Slumdog." Momentum can't be ignored.

Watch this blog for updates, ephemera and all manner of postulating.

  • Mmmmm, chocolate Oscar. Not every star will walk away from the 81st annual Academy Awards with a trophy, but if they hit the high-profile Governor's Ball they can have pastry chef Sherry Yard's gold-dusted candy version. Also on the menu from celeb chef Wolfgang Puck is tuna tartare in sesame miso cones, chopped Chino Farms vegetable salad with ginger soy vinaigrette, Maine lobster and caviar. Serve it up!
