Waning Sundance

On my last day in Park City I did one last Sundance Channel interview in front of the Egyptian in the swirling snow. I love the festival when it winds down and people catch up on the stuff they missed that has good word of mouth. Saturday I curled up in the condo and watched a DVD of the South African Passion of the Christ, Son of Man--the best film I saw at the entire festival, shot in vivid HD under the clear blue skies of Capetown. It's the second collaboration between Mark Dornford-May and the South African theater troupe Dimpho Di Kopane; their first, U-Carmen, won the Golden Lion in Berlin 2005. The transposition of the Christ story to a South African township amid brutal civil war works masterfully.

(I actually wrote about this in a nice long blog entry which was lost, as several have been this week, because the wireless connectionn in the condo was intermittent. very frustrating. I would have blogged more otherwise.)

I've never seen so few movies at Sundance. I kept wrapping up stories on deadline and running to the Eccles and being too late for the screening. Depressing. Or gone to so few parties. I was running as fast as I could, basically. I was jealous of producer Jim Jacks, who saw 14 movies in 5 days.

Never picked up any swag either (it's basically for the celebrities who really need it). I must have gone to the wrong parties. I try to pick the smaller dinners and skip the big Main Street parties if at all possible. I had the most fun at Zoom's Doc filmmakers party and Cinetic Party, Fox Searchlight's Thank You for Smoking dinner at North Face, Miramax's Kinky Boots dinner at Wahso, and the William Morris Party at The Shop. Low points were the dark, noisy frat-house miseries of The Illusionist and Darwin Awards parties.

The joy of Sundance is discovering new talent. While I liked Joey Lauren Adams' Come Early Morning, Dito Montiel's A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Laurie Collyer's Sherrybaby, Clive Gordon's Cargo, John Hillcoat's The Proposition, Chris Quinn's God Grew Tired of Us and Davis Guggenheim's An Inconvenient Truth, and I want to see those talented directors' next films, they weren't eureka moments of discovery.

The excitement came with Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton and writer Michael Arndt's perfectly calibrated Little Miss Sunshine, Ryan Fleck's sensitively nuanced Half Nelson, and the incandescent and spiritual Son of Man.
