Nude Starlets, Hollywood Books

_original
Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter knew what he was doing, putting two stark-naked young actresses on his cover. And saved money! Last night, I dropped by Book Soup for screenwriter Wesley Strick's book party for his funny 40s Hollywood novel Out There in the Dark (inspired by Douglas Sirk) and couldn't restrain myself from checking out a well-thumbed Vanity Fair (both Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley are striking blows for tiny-breasted sexy women). Ran into Book Soup owner Glen Goldman, who said that even his Sunset Strip store, long the most successful indie book store in L.A., is finding it tough going these days. I order many books from Amazon.com, but will make sure to make the trek to my favorite indies like Book Soup and Dutton's whenever I can. The enormous Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon turned itself into an online store with hundreds of employees. But Book Soup is about real customers browsing a fabulously stocked small store.
