Pandemonium struck Hall H for the first time of the Con when Johnny Depp made a surprise appearance for the Tim Burton/”Alice in Wonderland” portion of the Disney panel.
The crowd was already primed with Burton’s appearance, his first ever on a panel. Then he, along with the panel's moderator Patton Oswalt, showed footage.
Burton admitted that the movie constructs a story using elements from both “Alice in Wonderland” as “Through the Looking Glass” and Lewis Carroll’s related poems since Burton and the studio didn’t want the movie to be “a series of weird events.”
“We tried to make it new but … to be true to it too,” he said.
Then Burton said he had a friend who was going to show up and before Depp was even on stage, the crowd was on their feet screaming and cheering.
“He was in the neighborhood visiting Sea World,” Burton quipped.
Depp was onstage for less than two minutes, managed to say hello as thousands of flashes went off, then disappeared into the shadows from whence he came.
Looks like great fun! However the video quality is so dark, I’m surprised they allowed it to be posted. Also, is it necessary to watch a commercial before…a commercial?
