Flash floods! Wind! SAG Awards!

79069467

Rain of biblical proportions is falling on Los Angeles (Flash floods! Wind! Snow!! scream the local weather watchers) but the red carpet is still scheduled to unfurl for Sunday's SAG Awards (under a protective tent, depriving George Clooney of the chance to gallantly toss his tux jacket over puddles for stiletto-wearing starlets).

If you don't count Critics Choice, and most people don't, this will be the first nonpicketed full-regalia ceremony of the season. Whither Oscar? No one knows for sure.

Celebs may be counting on Sunday's event (Cruise is coming!), but it's really the media that's salivating, reports THR's Kimberly Nordyke. Outlets are throwing every available reporter/anchor/perfectly coiffed frustrated actress at the event.

Does this mean another heaping helping of Billy Bush? Oh snap.

SAG is prepped, though, even giving the press more room by lengthening the red carpet -- 20 more feet of asinine questions!

Speaking of weather, our brother blogger Ray Richmond gets a tear in his eye when gazing upon a beautiful rainbow that cast an ethereal halo over Hollywood yesterday. Could it be a sign that the draining writer's strike will be settled soon? C'mon, says Ray, there has to be a more realistic explanation than that.

Stay dry, all, and check back here Sunday for some of our patented semi-coherent awards coverage.

Oscar Contenders

  • So "The Dark Knight" didn't make it into the final five after all, never mind that critical and popular support. Let's just call the comic-inspired mega-hit "The Biggest Snubee."

Here are the best picture contenders in a race that, two weeks away from the Oscars, seems to be a foregone conclusion ("Slumdog") unless there's a come-from-behind possibility ("The Reader" anyone?)

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," with Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett; the politically timely "Milk;" rags-to-riches fairy tale, "Slumdog Millionaire," Holocaust best-seller-based drama "The Reader," and Watergate-era biopic "Frost/Nixon."

Could "Button" and "Slumdog" split the vote, allowing another film to take the prize? Doesn't seem likely. After having clung to "Button" for months as what we thought would be the Academy voters' top vhoice, our money's now on "Slumdog." Momentum can't be ignored.

Watch this blog for updates, ephemera and all manner of postulating.

  • Mmmmm, chocolate Oscar. Not every star will walk away from the 81st annual Academy Awards with a trophy, but if they hit the high-profile Governor's Ball they can have pastry chef Sherry Yard's gold-dusted candy version. Also on the menu from celeb chef Wolfgang Puck is tuna tartare in sesame miso cones, chopped Chino Farms vegetable salad with ginger soy vinaigrette, Maine lobster and caviar. Serve it up!
