Finale ratings: 'Fringe' and 'Biggest Loser'

Biggest loser winner UPDATED: NBC's live “Biggest Loser” finale (11.9 million viewers, 4.7 national adults 18-49 rating) marked the show’s largest adult demo rating since 2006. The increase comes despite NBC stretching the finale to a night-filling three hours and put the network in second place for the evening.

Fox was in first with “American Idol” (22.7 million, 8.0) and and the season finale of “Fringe” (9.3 million, 3.9), both slightly lower than recent performances.

The “Fringe” finale, titled "There's More Than One of Everything," featured the first appearance of Leonard Nimoy on the show and has prompted some discussion for its closing shot (video below)

In third, CBS aired softer-than-usual episodes of “NCIS” (16.2 million, 3.3), “Mentalist” (16.2 million, 3.3) and “Without a Trace” (13.4 million, 2.8).

Fourth-place ABC had “According to Jim” (3.8 million, 1.1), “Dancing With the Stars” (14.1 million, 3.1) results show and “Cupid” (5.1 million, 1.5). The CW aired “Reaper” (2 million, 0.9) and “90210 “(2.1 million, 1.2). Though the “90210” adult demo rating was typical, the show had its best 9 p.m. performance to date among the network's target women 18-34 demo/

Here's a season-to-date chart for Mentalist. The overall arc is very stable, though there was some surging midway growth that later seemed to slacken a bit, partly due to occasionally running against Idol.

Here's a Fringe producer explaining the decision. The move would have been more effective had Life on Mars hadn't done something very similar in its pilot...
