Roman Polanski's connection to OJ Simpson

We live in a small world.

Fifteen years ago, Marcia Clark was lead prosecutor in OJ Simpson's infamous murder trial. Today, she brings one of the most interesting developments in the Roman Polanski case in a column for The Daily Beast.

Last year, Polanski's lawyers had the Los Angeles district attorney's office review the HBO documentary  "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," pointing to an interview given by former prosecutor David Wells in which he describes private meetings with the judge in the case. Wells' interview formed a basis of Polanski's motion to dismiss the decades-old sex tape.

Now Clark writes that she's spoken to Wells, who says he made it all up!

"I lied," Wells is quoted as saying. "I know I shouldn't have done it, but I did. The director of the documentary told me it would never air in the States. I thought it made a better story if I said I'd told the judge what to do."

An incredible admission, but what does it mean for Polanski's case?

The revelation, if true, might mean Polanski's original sentence is less likely to be overturned. So the director will likely lean on his new lawyers, including Washington power player Reid Weingarten, to keep him out of the States at all cost. But given how low the credibility of Wells must be right now, perhaps the original prosecution of the case will get a closer look.
