Hollywood Docket: Michael Jackson musical; the new LimeWire; 'Twilight' t-shirt contest

  • Today in Michael Jackson legal news: Broadway theater group Nederlander is suing the executors of the Jackson estate claiming it has a valid contract to create a musical stage play based on the late pop singer's most famous hits, but that the estate is blocking it from doing so.   • Are deal lawyers about to party like it's 2007? There's a renewed willingness of media and entertainment players to explore mergers and acquisitions after a lull driven by the recession and financial crisis. [THR] 
  • Legit LimeWire? The company behind LimeWire is planning an ambitious post-lawsuit relaunch that includes a subscription-based service for both desktop and mobile apps. According to LimeWire, the recording industry is supportive of its new initiative. Seems hard to believe. [Paidcontent]
  • The subsidiary of a New York public broadcaster has settled a lawsuit over inadequately keeping track of public grant money by agreeing to repay the U.S. government $950,000 plus forgo $1 million more in federal grant money not yet received. [NYT 
  • Cafe Press is running an "official" Twilight t-shirt contest but participants can't use the "Twilight" movie logo, images or any copyrighted material from the movies. Does that insulate it from liability under the Lanham Act? [Techdirt] Meanwhile, "Twilight" studio Summit is still battling Zazzle.com over print-on-demand merchandising that featured Twilight trademarks and copyrights.
